VAT refunds

Travelers with a permanent address outside the EU, who have purchased goods in Denmark, may be eligible for a VAT refund at Copenhagen Airport.

In order to have VAT refunded, you must be a non-EU resident. Furthermore, you must have purchased goods with a total value exceeding DKK 300 from the same store (for individuals residing in Norway, the minimum is DKK 1,200 per item). You must also take the goods out of the EU within three months from the month of purchase.

If Denmark is the last EU destination before the home country/final destination

Purchases outside the airport (before security check):

If you have purchased goods in Denmark before arriving at Copenhagen Airport, you can get a VAT refund of between 10% and 19% of the total price of the goods, depending on how much you have spent on the goods and the VAT refund operator.

To receive a VAT refund, you must have a tax-free document from the store where you purchased the goods. This document must include the following:

  • Date of issue
  • Name and address of the store, as well as VAT registration number
  • Receipt, including quantity, type, receipt number and value of the goods (selling price including VAT and the VAT amount),
  • Your name and address

In addition to the above, you must be able to prove that you reside outside the EU with a passport or equivalent identification. Furthermore, you must be able to present a flight ticket.

Please note: VAT refund validation must always take place at the final point of exit from the EU. The VAT can only be refunded once this validation has been completed.

The tax-free document must be stamped at Copenhagen Airport before you pass through the security check. VAT refund operators are located in Terminal 3.

Outside opening hours, Customs in Terminal 3 can stamp all tax-free documents provided that the goods purchased can be presented.

All purchases exceeding DKK 25,000 must be validated by Customs in Terminal 3.

Purchases inside the airport (after security check):

If you purchase goods in the shops at Copenhagen Airport, you have the opportunity to get a VAT refund of between 10% and 20% of the total price of the goods.

In some shops, you can get the VAT refunded directly in the store; in others, you need to get the VAT refunded via a VAT refund operator, such as Global Blue or Planet. The Planet service desk is located inside the Forex store at gates B. In all TAX FREE shops, it is possible to get a VAT refund for LEGO products, sunglasses, jewellery, and watches.

All purchases exceeding DKK 50,000 must be validated by a VAT refund operator such as Global Blue between gates B and C or Planet (Forex) at gates B. It is a condition that the goods can be presented.

Regardless of whether you can get the VAT refunded directly in the store, or you need to use a VAT refund operator, you must be able to prove that you reside outside the EU with a passport or equivalent identification. Furthermore, you must be able to present a flight ticket.

Please note: VAT refund validation must always take place at the final point of exit from the EU. The VAT can only be refunded once this validation has been completed.

If you use a VAT refund operator, you must also have a tax-free document from the store where the goods were purchased. This document must include the following:

  • Date of issue
  • Name and address of the store, as well as VAT registration number
  • Receipt, including quantity, type, receipt number and value of the goods (selling price including VAT and the VAT amount),
  • Your name and address

If Denmark is not the last EU destination before your home country/final destination

If your final destination is not Denmark, and you have a layover at another European airport before your final destination, you can still purchase goods and have a VAT refund.

In this case, you must obtain a VAT refund validation at the final point of exit from the EU.  VAT can only be refunded once the validation has been completed at your last EU departure point.

For residents of Norway or The Åland Islands

If you are a resident of Norway or the Åland Islands, you can only get a VAT refund on goods if the sales price for each item exceeds DKK 1,200.

In order to get a VAT refund, you must have paid VAT in Norway or on the Åland Islands and then return the validated document to the VAT refund operator.

More information on the special rules applying to residents of Norway or the Åland Islands can be found on the Danish Customs Agency’s website here: https://toldst.dk/en-us/individuals/vat-refunds.
