Customs regulations & VAT refunds

Regardless of your destination, you can buy perfumes, cosmetics, wine and spirits in the TAX FREE-Shop.

Duty-free shopping at the TAX FREE store

You can buy perfume, cosmetics, wine, and spirits at the TAX-FREE store, no matter where you are traveling. If your final destination is a non-EU member country, you can also shop duty-free at the TAX FREE store.

If you are traveling to one of the following destinations, you can shop duty-free at the TAX FREE stores located in Copenhagen Airport:

  • Faroe Islands
  • Greenland
  • The Canary Islands (e.g., Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuertaventura)
  • Åland Islands
  • Overseas Departments (Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Réunion, and Mayotte)
  • Cyprus (the northern part)

Contact the Customs Agency regarding the specific customs rules for your destination. They can help you understand how the customs rules are before your departure, during your trip, and, of course, what you are allowed to bring home.

More details can be found on the Customs Agency's website.

VAT refund:

If you are a tourist in Denmark with a permanent address outside the EU and have purchased goods in the country, you can get the VAT refunded at Copenhagen Airport.

General conditions:

To be eligible for VAT refund, you must purchase one or more items with a total value exceeding DKK 300 in each store (for individuals residing in Norway: minimum DKK 1,200 per item).

Crucial to where you can get the money refunded is whether Denmark is the last EU destination before your home country/final destination or not. The amount can only be paid out in Denmark if Denmark is the last EU destination before your home country/final destination.

If Denmark is the last EU destination before the home country/final destination

  • Purchases made at shops outside the airport:

If you have purchased goods in Denmark before arriving at Copenhagen Airport, you can get a refund of between 10% and 19% of the total price of the item, depending on the amount.

Procedure:

  1. The store where the item was purchased issues a check upon request if you are a resident outside the EU.
  2. The check must be stamped at the airport in Terminal 3 (Danish, Swedish, Finnish, and Norwegian Global Blue Checks are stamped by Global Blue. Danish and Norwegian Planet Checks are stamped by Planet, which you can find in Global Exchange). Outside opening hours, Customs in Terminal 3 stamps all checks.
  3. The amount can then be claimed at Global Blue or Planet Tax Free.
  • Purchases made in the airport:

If you buy goods in the shops at Copenhagen Airport, you have the opportunity to get a refund of between 10-20% of the total price of the item.

In some shops, you can get the amount refunded directly in the store, and in others, you need to get the amount refunded via either Global Blue or Planet.

If Denmark is not the last EU destination before your home country/final destination

If you have a layover in another European airport before your final destination, you can still buy goods and get a VAT refund, but the money will be paid out in the EU destination airport where you have the layover, not in Copenhagen Airport.

This means you still need to have your Danish receipts checked and stamped by Danish customs. This can be done at either Global Blue or Planet (Global Exchange), which are available both before and after security checks.

For residents of Norway

If you are a resident of Norway, you can only get a refund of the VAT on goods if the sales price for each item exceeds DKK 1,200.

You must contact Norwegian customs to pay the import tax before refunding the Danish VAT. To get the Danish VAT refunded, the Norwegian VAT must be paid upon entry to Norway. Based on this, Global Blue advises against issuing Tax-Free forms for individuals residing in Norway.
