Partnerships and projects

In order to ensure a sustainable transition of the aviation industry, it is evident that new technologies must be developed and implemented. Securing the right technologies will require a joint effort involving airports, airlines, governments, as well as other public and knowledge institutions.

Building successful partnerships across the aviation sector is key to achieving Copenhagen Airports' sustainability targets. Through strategic alliances and dedicated innovation efforts we collaborate and interact with relevant stakeholders across the value chain to solve today’s complex challenges which require innovative thinking and joint solutions.

At present, many partnerships and projects focus on the three pathways, which we believe are the main solutions for a transition towards an aviation industry that emits fewer greenhouse gases than the current use of conventional jet fuels: sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), hydrogen and electric aircraft.

EU's regulatory framework

A regulatory framework for Copenhagen Airports is ReFuelEU Aviation, which is an integral part of the European Green Deal and the Fit for 55 plan. While Fit for 55 creates the overall political pressure, ReFuelEU focuses on specific actions that address the unique challenges faced by the aviation sector in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Together, the two initiatives work towards achieving the EU's climate targets for 2030 and 2050.

ReFuelEU Aviation primarily focuses on promoting the use of sustainable fuels but also requires airports to prepare for the arrival of electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft.
