Record-breaking May: More than 3 million travellers at Copenhagen Airport

Growth continues at Copenhagen Airport, where 3.1 million travellers passed through the terminals in May. More travellers from across Denmark are flying via Copenhagen and continuing on to destinations around the world.

The summer travel season has got off to a strong start at Copenhagen Airport. In May, passenger numbers rose by seven per cent to 3.1 million, marking the highest number ever recorded for the month of May.

“The global appetite for travel remains strong despite rising fuel prices, and several days in May were on par with the busiest travel days at the airport last summer,” says Peter Krogsgaard, Chief Commercial Officer at Copenhagen Airport.

Traffic growth is driven by developments on European routes. Norway tops the list as the most popular country with 259,000 travellers, while to the south, Italy shows the strongest growth with 231,000 passengers. On routes between Copenhagen and the 12 Italian destinations, there were 36,000 more travellers in May, corresponding to an increase of 18 per cent compared with last year.

Significant increase in domestic travel
There is also growth on domestic routes. In the first five months of the year, 590,000 passengers travelled on the six domestic routes to and from Copenhagen Airport. This is an increase of 108,000 compared with last year, corresponding to a growth of 22 per cent.

“It has become easier to travel between different parts of Denmark. Airlines have added more departures on routes to Aalborg and Aarhus, and routes to Billund and Midtjylland Karup have been reopened. Good air connections are vital for mobility in Denmark, both for leisure and business travellers,” says Peter Krogsgaard.

The growth is also linked to Copenhagen Airport increasingly serving as an international hub for onward travel. The share of transfer passengers on domestic routes has increased by more than five percentage points compared with last year.

“Copenhagen Airport is Denmark’s international airport. More travellers from western Denmark are flying via Copenhagen, and today four out of ten domestic passengers are transfer passengers who continue their journey on one of the 330 routes available from Copenhagen this summer,” says Peter Krogsgaard.
