New EU rules change border control for non-Schengen passengers

A new digital solution aims to enhance security at the EU’s external borders. The change is implemented across the EU and will directly affect non-Schengen nationals traveling to Copenhagen Airport.

On 12 October 2025, the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) will come into effect. The system is a digital solution designed to strengthen security at the EU’s external borders by modernising the registration process for entry into and exit from the Schengen Area. The new system applies to all travelers who are not citizens of a Schengen country*.

In Denmark, the police are responsible for implementing the EES at all border crossing points – including Copenhagen Airport. For non-Schengen passengers arriving from destinations outside the Schengen Area, this means a new registration procedure prior to passport control. Travelers will be required to use a digital self-service kiosk to enter information such as the purpose of their visit and details about their stay in the Schengen Area.

Copenhagen Airport, in collaboration with the police, has established the necessary infrastructure to ensure a smooth transition to the new system. However, longer waiting times may occur upon arrival in the passport control area due to the updated procedures. The airport has therefore deployed additional staff to assist and guide passengers through the process.
