Single-day record numbers at Copenhagen Airport in May
Copenhagen Airport served 2.4 million travellers this May and set a new single-day record. The airport is now preparing for the summer season by adding extra staff and planning new activities in the terminals. Travellers have 177 direct destinations to choose from.
With nine out of ten passengers back, Copenhagen Airport is buzzing with activity and excitement.
Traffic to European destinations has all but been restored, and the North American network is also back at full strength.
A total of 2,396,270 passengers travelled through Copenhagen Airport in May, an increase of 415,000 on the previous month.
Sunday 21 May was to date the busiest travel day of the year with 96,000 passengers – primarily travellers returning home from the Ascension Day long weekend.
As usual, London topped the list of the ten most popular destinations for the month. Other major cities, such as Amsterdam, Paris and Vienna, were also on the list, which also included southern European destinations such as Málaga and Milan.
“Now that May with all its statutory holidays has passed, our high season is really getting underway. We look forward to taking good care of the 7.5 million passengers expected to pass through the terminals in June, July and August on their way to one of the 177 direct destinations offered by the airlines and charter operators,” says Chief Commercial Officer Peter Krogsgaard of Copenhagen Airports A/S.
“The airlines' summer programme features more than thirty new destinations on the route map – especially in southern Europe. Once again, Spain is the top scorer in terms of seats available, followed by France and Italy,” he explains.
Ready for summer
The airport has launched a Destination Summer campaign on social media, the cph.dk website, the CPH app and in the terminals, offering travel advice, inspiration, great deals and events during the summer.
“Everyone at the airport has worked very hard to get everything ready. For example, we’ve taken on 155 additional employees for Security, so we’ll have enough staff to get all travellers well through Security and on to their flights. We also have special family lanes where there is plenty of time for our younger travellers,” says Krogsgaard.
More staff has been taken on in cleaning services and for the green-shirted ‘Green Team’ service staff who assist passengers in the terminals. In addition, CPH has adjusted the terminal opening hours.
“During the summer period, many travellers take very early flights, especially those going by charter, so several of the cafes will now open as early as 4:00 am,” says Krogsgaard.
He recommends that travellers arrive at the airport well ahead of their flights’ departure times. That means two hours before departure for flights to Europe and three hours for long-haul flights to destinations outside Europe.
