Busy start to the summer at Copenhagen Airport
More than three million travellers passed through Copenhagen Airport during the first month of the summer season – a nine per cent year-on-year increase. Spain is the most popular holiday destination overall, while Greece is the favourite charter destination.
Summer is holiday season. Many head south for beaches and fun in the sun, while international tourists flock to Copenhagen to experience the Danish capital and the rest of the country. This means busy times at Copenhagen Airport, as 3.1 million passengers passed through the terminals in June.
“The summer season is off to a great start at Copenhagen Airport, and that special summer holiday atmosphere is spreading. More than three million passengers in the month of June is a first for us, and the terminals are teeming with activity. But we are well prepared and are doing everything we can to give travellers a good experience on their way through the airport,” says Chief Commercial Officer Peter Krogsgaard of Copenhagen Airports A/S.
Spain is the top holiday destination
Spain remains the most popular country for holidaymakers, followed by Italy, France, Greece and Turkey. In June, 240,000 passengers travelled between Copenhagen and sunny Spanish destinations such as Malaga, Mallorca and Barcelona.
“Spain is a classic destination offering guaranteed sunny weather and holiday atmosphere, which attracts many Danes. Almost one in ten passengers in June travelled between Copenhagen and one of the eleven Spanish destinations. At the same time, more Spanish travellers have discovered Denmark and the rest of Scandinavia as a place to visit over the summer,” says Krogsgaard.
Greece is the favourite among charter tourists. More than half of all charter holidays from Copenhagen go to Greece, with the islands of Crete and Rhodes as the most popular destinations.
More Americans and Brits visit Copenhagen
Denmark and Copenhagen is also a popular tourist destination. International travellers coming to Copenhagen as tourists or visitors make up 37 per cent of all passengers at the airport.
Almost one in five – or 18 per cent – of international passengers arriving in Copenhagen are from the UK, while Americans make up 12 per cent. That is a year-on-year increase of four and three percentage points, respectively.
“We are seeing a clear increase in the number of Americans and Brits travelling to Copenhagen and the rest of Denmark via Copenhagen Airport. Denmark is an attractive country to visit with lots to offer, and with several new routes, getting here has become easier as well,” says Krogsgaard.
Overall, Danish travellers account for about a third of all passengers at Copenhagen Airport. Swedes make up 15 per cent, and the rest are mainly British, American, German and Norwegian travellers.
New summer routes out of Copenhagen
So far, there are 317 direct routes out of Copenhagen to 171 destinations in 52 countries to choose from this summer.
“Our route map has been expanded with 13 new routes this summer, so there are plenty of opportunities to travel the world. In June, SAS opened a new route to Nuuk, while FlyOne launched a route to Chișinău – the first direct route to Moldova since 2019,” says Krogsgaard.
European routes made up 86 per cent of traffic in June. 330,000 passengers travelled on one of the 41 long-haul routes to and from Copenhagen – including two new routes to Seattle and Minneapolis operated by SAS and Delta Air Lines, respectively.
