Strong summer programme with 278 routes out of Copenhagen Airport
More than 2.2 million passengers passed through Copenhagen Airport in March. This was 12 per cent more than last year, and the rise in traffic numbers seems set to continue over the course of the summer. The airlines have launched their summer programmes, offering close to 300 routes in all from Copenhagen to destinations around the world.
The spring season is off to a good start at Copenhagen Airport. With a traffic flow of 2,225,533 passengers, it was the busiest March at Copenhagen Airport in four years.
“Travel and adventure abroad are a high priority for many. We are off to a good start to the spring season. The number of passengers from Denmark and southern Sweden travelling abroad continues to rise – and many tourists are choosing to visit Copenhagen and the rest of Denmark, as well,” says Peter Krogsgaard, Chief Commercial Officer of Copenhagen Airports A/S.
Spain the favourite spring destination
Spain tops the list of the most popular countries. More than 210,000 passengers travelled to and from Spain in March – Malaga, Barcelona and Gran Canaria being the top destinations. While many chose to travel to the mild climate of Southern Europe for their Easter holidays, London remains the number one destination from Copenhagen Airport, with 148,000 passengers.
For the longer routes out of Copenhagen Airport, Doha, Qatar is the most popular destination. 15 percent of all passengers on long-haul routes out of Copenhagen fly to Doha, which is often used as a layover en route to Asia, Africa or Australia. Bangkok and New York are the second and third most popular destinations.
More new routes and destinations
The airlines started their summer traffic programmes at the end of March. This spring will see the launch of 28 new routes from Copenhagen for a total of 278 routes out of Copenhagen Airport to 160 different destinations.
”The airlines’ summer programmes offer a number of exiting news, and we are proud that more airlines are choosing to operate routes to and from Copenhagen. New routes and new destinations strengthen our position as an attractive airport of choice for passengers from both Denmark and southern Sweden,” says Peter Krogsgaard.
In June, the world’s largest airline, American Airlines, will open a route at Copenhagen Airport with a daily service to Philadelphia. Also in June, SAS will expand its route network to the United States with daily flights between Copenhagen and Atlanta, Georgia.
SAS is launching a total of nine new routes to destinations including Ibiza, Sarajevo and Dalaman on the Turkish Riviera, while Norwegian is introducing ten new routes, adding destinations such as Valencia and Toulouse to the Copenhagen Airport route map. Ryanair is adding five new routes to its programme this summer.
