Copenhagen Airport: last year’s record already beaten in November
By the end of November, more people had flown via Copenhagen Airport than in the whole of last year. In November, there were 5.2% more passengers than in the same month last year, taking the total number of passengers in 2016 to almost 27 million.
In 2015, Copenhagen Airport had record passenger numbers, with 26.6 million people passing through the airport. The trend has continued this year, which means last year’s record was already broken in November. In all, 26,963,608 people passed through the airport in the first 11 months of the year, 9.3% more than in the same period in 2015.
In November, 2,176,356 passed through the airport, 5.2% more than in the same month in 2015. This continued the high growth rates that Copenhagen Airport has enjoyed throughout the year:
“We saw strong growth last year, and it’s been even more impressive this year,” says Copenhagen Airport’s CEO Thomas Woldbye. “Copenhagen Airport is one of the fastest growing airports in Europe, due in no small part to the fact that we’ve been good at attracting new routes, while a number of airlines have expanded their capacity with either more departures or larger aircraft. We have a target to create an airport that can handle 40 million passengers a year, and we’re well on the way to achieving that. We’re therefore investing up to DKK 20 billion in expanding the airport in the coming years.”
The long-haul, intercontinental routes are experiencing particularly high growth. In November, 31,236 more people travelled to outside Europe from Copenhagen Airport, 15.2% more than in the same month last year. This means that this year there have been 11.2% more passengers on long-haul routes.
“The intercontinental routes to destinations outside Europe are vital for Copenhagen Airport as a hub, so we’re particularly focused on attracting new routes. When 2015 ended, we had 32 long-haul routes; this year we’ve reached 36. When new, direct routes to far-away destinations open up, it means more passengers, and this year in November alone there were 15.2% more than in the same month last year,” says Thomas Woldbye.
In November, London was once again the most popular destination, with more than 210,000 passengers travelling there. So far this year, the total number of passengers has increased by 9.3%. Domestic traffic has increased by 6.3%, European traffic by 9.2% and intercontinental traffic by 11.1%.
