How SAS’ ticket competition reached millions of travellers

Copenhagen Airport runs monthly competitions to help airlines generate awareness in the Danish and Swedish markets. See how SAS reached more than 1,400,000 people on Facebook – completely organically – in one of our best performing competitions ever.

Copenhagen Airport provides a range of free promotion packages to help airlines boost awareness and drive sales in the Danish and Swedish markets. A key part of this effort is our monthly flight ticket competition, which provides airlines and destinations with valuable exposure on our award-winning Facebook page and B2C newsletter. 

How does the competition work?

To run a competition, airlines just need to provide two return tickets to their chosen destination. There is no additional cost. The competition runs on our Facebook page, which was Highly Commended in the 2019 Moodie awards. Your competition will receive additional promotion from an Instagram Story and in our CPH Newsletter, which is sent to more than 250,000 Danish travellers. Your airline and competition will be featured in the newsletter’s first two content blocks, with the potential for more coverage if you offer more as part of your competition, such as business-class, a hotel stay, or a promotional code.

How many people does it reach?

Your competition will be exposed to our 175,000+ followers on Facebook, 28,000+ followers on Instagram, and 300,000+ newsletter subscribers. Previous competitions with Brussels Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Thai Phuket, SAS and more have achieved an organic reach on Facebook ranging between 1-2 million people. These each generated between 40k-100k competition entries, with SAS’ CPH-LAX competition marking our highest number of entries to date. 

Of course, our team is here to help you optimise your campaign. For example, our data shows that the better the prize, the better the competition performs. So we recommend offering long-haul flights, or adding extras like business-class tickets or a hotel stay.

How SAS become one of our best performing competitions

In November 2019, SAS ran a competition to promote their new route to Los Angeles, offering two Business Smart tickets from CPH to LAX. We promoted the competition in a newsletter with three content blocks dedicated to SAS. The first contained information about the competition, with a direct link to enter on Facebook. The second block featured SAS Business, and the third SAS’ Airbus 350.

The newsletter achieved a staggering 32.7% unique click-through rate. In comparison, our next-best performing competition had a 28% CTR, while the Mailchimp marketing benchmark for travel and transportation is 2.25%. On Facebook, the SAS competition generated a completely organic reach of 1,434,206 people, with 135,655 total engagements (29,710 likes, 102,287 comments and 1,260 shares). This 7% engagement rate is one of the highest that we have ever measured. Overall, the competition had the largest number of participants in Copenhagen Airport’s history of flight ticket competitions!
