The Danish model is based on 2 main areas – i) which countries the Danish borders are open for, for inbound travelers to Denmark from other countries, and ii) Guidelines for outbound Danish travelers to other countries. Both models are based on the same principals, where the main criteria is the number of new virus cases in a given country. There can be countries which Danes are recommended not to travel, but where the Danish borders are open for travelers from the same country. This is due to the country’s travel restrictions for Danish travelers. Both models are mainly focused on countries within the Schengen, EU and UK area, but there are also a few countries outside this area which are open.

Danish borders: Restrictions on inbound travelers to Denmark

Every Thursday the Danish authorities evaluate the countries within the EU, Schengen and UK area, and evaluate them based on different criteria. One of the most important criteria is the number of new cases per 100.000 inhabitant, in average over the last 2 weeks. For the Danish borders to close on travelers from a country, the country’s number has to be over 30, and for the borders to open for a country again, the number has to be under 20.

For countries outside the EU, Schengen and UK area, the Danish authorities are evaluating EU’s list of countries that live up to the EU’s COVID-19 criteria for traveling to the EU. These countries are evaluated every second Thursday.

Travelers from countries that the Danish borders are closed towards, can still enter Denmark if the traveler has a valid reason to do so. This can for example be a business meeting, or if the person works in Denmark.

You can find more information about which countries the Danish borders are open for travelers from here.

Travel guidelines: Guidelines for outbound travelers from Denmark

When travelers from a country are banned from entering Denmark, following the above-described model, the country is also automatically on the list of countries that Danes are advised against all un-necessary travels to. There can therefore not be a country, where travelers cannot enter Denmark, but where Danish travelers are not advised to travel to. However, if the Danish borders are open to a country, but the other country has strict travel restrictions for Danish travelers, the country can also be on the list of countries that Danes are advised against all un-necessary travels to.
