Praise for summer travellers in a busy June at Copenhagen Airport

There were five days in June on which more than 100,000 passengers passed through the airport. And despite the large numbers, the passengers were able to make quick progress – not least through the central security checkpoint. Overall, the month saw passenger growth of 0.6% compared to the very busy June last year. Fewer people travelled to Turkey, more to Spain.

Copenhagen Airport has started the summer well. It was the busiest June in the airport’s history, with 2,773,508 passengers, an increase of 0.6% on last year, which was itself a strong growth month.

Of the five days in June with more than 100,000 passengers, Friday 30 was the month’s busiest, with 103,926 passengers.

“It was pretty hectic in the terminals in June,” says Copenhagen Airport’s CEO Thomas Woldbye. “And on top of that we’re in the middle of a number of major construction projects that can’t be halted during the summer holiday – notably the expansion of the central security checkpoint to twice its current size.”

“However, despite the construction screens and the slight reduction in space, the passengers got through security really quickly. On the busiest day, 30 June, the average waiting time during the busiest period was 4 minutes and 12 seconds,” says Thomas Woldbye. “So full credit to the employees and to the passengers, who this year have been really good at preparing themselves for security and showing consideration to one another.”

Looking at the passenger numbers, the long-haul routes showed an increase of 7.7% on June last year, while the domestic routes declined by 10.2%. So far this year, there has been overall passenger growth of 2.3%.

In terms of destinations, London was still a clear number 1, despite a drop of 2.3%. This was mainly due to easyJet closing its route to London Luton.

The usual summer holiday destinations are not big enough to make the top 10. But looking further down the tables, there were increases on the routes to Athens and Spanish destinations such as Majorca, Malaga and Barcelona of around 10-15%, and decreases to Turkish destinations such as Bodrum, Istanbul and Alanya of around 15-50%.
