Trend of falling passenger numbers at Copenhagen Airports continued

The economic downturn continues to affect passenger numbers at Copenhagen Airport. There were approximately 1.3 million passengers in January, a 14.3% decline as compared with the same month last year.

“The Danes are clearly travelling less, a trend we have seen over the past few months," said Carsten Nørland, Director of Aviation at Copenhagen Airports A/S.

The number of departing passengers was down by 15% in January, whilst the number of incoming passengers was down 13.5% as compared with the level in January 2008. A total of 1,310,188 million passengers travelled through Copenhagen Airport, representing a 14.3% decline as compared with the same month last year.

Promising co-operation
“After the bankruptcy of Sterling, we have attracted a number of new routes and airlines to the airport, and competition has intensified on a number of routes. We are continuously working with the airlines to improve productivity and increase profitability on the individual routes, and that co-operation looks promising,” said Nørland.

This will partly involve a conference later this month: the airport has invited the airlines for discussions and negotiations about increased collaboration among the airlines with the objective of further improving the airport’s role as a hub for Scandinavia and therefore increasing the number of transfer passengers.

General fall
We are seeing a general fall in traffic volume, i.e. there are no individual types of traffic that are falling substantially more than others. This confirms previous messages from players such as airlines, the travel industry and the business community stating that both business and leisure travel is hit by the financial crisis.
