Test of future mobile opportunities at Copenhagen Airport

Passengers at Copenhagen Airport are invited to participate actively in an exciting research project via their mobile phones. The objective of the project is to develop a future information service that will make it easier for passengers to find their way through the airport and get to the gate in time.

Many passengers use Copenhagen Airport’s free text messaging service to get information about flight arrivals and departures. However, the latest technology includes a wide range of other possibilities of helping passengers find their way through the airport.

Free mobile service
Through the research and innovation project SPOPOS, Copenhagen Airport is currently developing an information service for future use, and passengers are invited to participate in the project (only passengers with danish mobile numbers). They can do so by registering for the free GateCaller mobile service, which will be used during a test period until the turn of the year.

To participate in this free service, passengers must have a mobile phone with a danish number, Bluetooth, a web browser and the ability to access the internet via the airport’s wireless network or the passenger’s own service provider.

Let family and friends join in
The GateCaller system can “see" where in the system the participant is located. This means that the participant will

  • automatically receive a text message if he or she is about to be late for the gate
  • be able to find his or her own position at the airport via a map on the mobile phone screen
  • have the opportunity to allow friends and family so see where the participant is located via their mobile phone
  • get information on flight departures like to those displayed on the screens at the airport.

The data collected in the SPOPOS project during the test period will be treated as confidential and will solely be used in anonymised form for research purposes.

One of the elements being tested in the development of SPOPOS is how passengers can be offered extra services mobile phone and thus avoid being late at the gate, and the system will also help the airport predict where queues will arise.
