Roskilde Airshow 2009: A must for flight enthusiasts

The weekend of 22 to 23 August will be full of excitement for people who make their way to Roskilde Airport for the eighth Roskilde Airshow. The final programme of the two-day airshow will be announced a week ahead of show start, but it is already certain that the legendary Red Arrows from Britain’s Royal Air Force will visit Roskilde on Sunday, 23 August.

The big name at this year’s airshow will be the Red Arrows of the UK who will make many people look up into the air to enjoy an amazing display with their characteristic bright red Hawk T1 aircraft. Since the team was formed in 1965, the Red Arrows have completed 4,000 displays in 53 countries. The nine carefully selected pilots who make up the Red Arrows team all come from the frontline squadrons of the Royal Air Force. Visitors to the airshow’s official website, http://www.airshow.dk/, can read about the many different shows
and events of the weekend and get a foretaste of the formidable precision flying skills of the British pilots.

Big names from Denmark and abroad
There will also be many other exciting things to watch at the show, so there is every reason to take both young and old flight enthusiasts of both sexes along to Roskilde. Both days will open with parachute jumping before the many guests from Denmark and abroad will present their skills and beautiful aircraft in a steady flow.

The international guests will include the Royal Dutch Air Force who will present an F16 show, and aircraft history buffs will have the opportunity to appreciate a Hawker Hunter from Swedish Air Force Historic Flight and the charming Chipmunk aircraft.

There will also be a great range of shows on offer from our domestic skies, including two roaring F16s from the de-icing service of the Danish Armed Forces, a classic DC 3 aircraft, noiseless gliders and radio-controlled model aircraft.

Record-high attendance expected
Expectations for the Roskilde Airshow 2009 are high. “Given the exciting programme, including the Red Arrows, the Dutch armed forces and many other exciting entries from Denmark and abroad, we expect a record-high attendance this year – up to 25,000,” said Per Faldborg Olesen, airshow coordinator, who is busy organising the big show in collaboration with Roskilde Airport and other organisers. Although the airport will be closed to ordinary traffic during the show periods, there will be many additional tasks to be handled and many extra hands working at the airport before, during and after the Roskilde Airshow. “It is a busy and exciting time for us when our tiny airport becomes a large workplace for a weekend with thousands of guests. A welcome variation to the day-to-day routines for me and my staff,” said Lars Lip, airport manager of Roskilde Airport.
