based on a survey of 134 airports worldwide – including more than 40 airports in Europe. This was the second time in a row that the ATRS rated Copenhagen Airport the most efficient airport in the world. Altogether, the airport has received the award five times.
The ATRS is an academic forum of professors specialising in aviation at a number of universities worldwide. The organisation uses a number of different criteria to identify the most efficient airports, including productivity, competitiveness, charges and financial performance.
“It is important to be efficient in all areas in order to operate a modern, well-functioning airport. This applies not least during periods of economic crisis like the current worldwide crisis. The more efficient we are, the better will we be positioned to get through the crisis and exploit the growth that will come after a period of economic downturn,” said Henrik Peter Jørgensen, VP, Communications at Copenhagen Airports A/S. He was presented with the award at the annual conference of the ATRS at Abu Dhabi during the past weekend.
A prerequisite for new routesThe future opportunities and challenges of Copenhagen Airport have been debated recently against the background of a report entitled “Der er noget i luften” (There is something in the air) by Copenhagen Economics, which points to the need to attract additional routes to the airport in order to strengthen the Copenhagen region and attract more companies and tourists. This could partly be achieved through increased collaboration with the organisations in the region regarding marketing of the airport and the establishment of a route development fund.
“Efficient operations are one of the prerequisites for our ability to attract new routes and airlines in future in competition with other European airports. It is therefore of great importance that we have been rated the most efficient airport in Europe,” said Henrik Peter Jørgensen.
In another survey, “Airlines on Airports”, prepared by “Research for Travel” in 2008, Copenhagen Airport also ranked at the very top among European airports in a number of the other parameters that are crucial to airlines when they decide to open new routes.
