New service to Shanghai from Copenhagen

Starting 30 October, the Chinese airline China Eastern Airlines will operate a new service from Copenhagen to Shanghai via Frankfurt. The service will support the airport’s strong focus on extending the number of routes and destinations it has to Asia, which has seen a massive increase in passenger numbers in recent years.

Beginning on 30 October, passengers will once again be able to fly from Copenhagen Airport to Shanghai on China Eastern Airlines’ service to Frankfurt, which will be extended to Copenhagen twice a week: Thursdays and Saturdays.

“We are focusing strongly on the Asian market because we have seen a significant rise in the number of passengers travelling to the various Asian destinations in recent years. Passenger numbers rose by 10% between 2005 and 2007, and we expect China Eastern Airlines’ new service to Shanghai to generate additional growth,” says Carsten Nørland, aviation director at Copenhagen Airports A/S.

Based in Shanghai, China Eastern Airlines is one of three large government-owned Chinese airlines. The company has more than 40,000 employees and a fleet of 224 aircrafts servicing 119 Chinese and international destinations.

On the service, the airline will use Airbus 330-200s, which seat some 250 passengers. Despite the fact that China Eastern flies via Frankfurt, it will probably be one of the fastest connections to Shanghai, the Asian destination without direct service to Copenhagen Airport that sees the largest number of Danish passengers.
