More light and space

A hot-dog cart, Cocio chocolate milk, speeches and a rooftree with a wreath – all ingredients of a traditional topping-out ceremony – were in space when the the progress of the expansion of the transit area at Copenhagen Airport was celebrated with this traditional Danish ceremony on Thursday, 7 February.

Behind the temporary walls partitioning off the construction areas in Copenhagen Airport’s transit area, the builders are working at full speed to expand the transit area between Terminals 2 and 3. And on a sunny day in February, their work was celebrated with speeches and congratulations.

Expansion and redesign of the transit area

The transit area of Copenhagen Airport will be expanded and redesigned in 2008. The area will therefore be affected by construction work in the coming period.

On the other hand, passengers can look forward to more space and better facilities in the transit area of

Copenhagen Airport, where expansion and changes to the walkways and seating areas, restaurants and shops are well under way.

Copenhagen Airport is expanding and renovating a total of 5000 square metres in Terminal 2. About 2000 square metres of this space will be used as a shopping centre for the many passengers who pass through the airport every day. The shopping area “high street” weaves through the transit area and will be about 14 metres wide and 150 metres long when it is finished.

Views of the apron

“We are expanding Terminal 2 to make it easier for passengers to find their way arount at the airport. The new large shopping area that runs through the transit area has skylights, and the light from these skylights helps give passengers a feeling of direction,” said Kristian Slaarup Kongstad, Property Manager at Copenhagen Airports. He continues:

“From the restaurant and shopping areas, passengers will have a view out over the apron. The daylight streaming into the area will make it feel more spacious and give passengers a better feeling of orientation throughout the transit area.”

A new, central information square

An important element of the building project is also the establishment of a central information square with a new information desk. A new large information screen will be installed here which will make it easy for passengers to read departure times, boarding times and gate numbers at a distance.

In addition, new lavatories will be built at both ends of the shopping area, with 12 toilets in each.

It is expected that the refurbished and expanded transit area will be finished in early autumn 2008. The shops will open gradually as the construction progresses; the first two have already opened their doors to passengers.
