Successful route expansions to the USA

The market for air travel between Copenhagen and the United States is growing. After the increase of routes and frequencies between Copenhagen and the United States, numbers of airline passengers travelling to US destinations are record high.

There is a growing demand for air travel between Copenhagen and the United States. Scheduled flights by SAS, Delta and Continental between Copenhagen Airport and the United States carried 784,000 passengers over the past year (1 May 2006 to 30 April 2007), i.e. 25% more than in the same period last year – and the highest number ever.

In early May 2006, Copenhagen Airport opened a new connection to the United States when Delta launched a new route to Atlanta. Later that same month, Continental Airlines began flights to New York, a city already served by SAS. In addition, SAS operates routes to Seattle, Chicago and Washington, DC.

Strong ties between trady and industry

On top of this, 2007 saw increases in frequencies of flights to the USA. On 20 May, SAS increased its frequencies to New York by four evening departures per week. This route will be operated until 31 August 2007.

"Many passengers who used to travel to the USA via other large European airports now choose to fly directly from here. This strengthens Copenhagen’s position as a European air traffic hub," said Corinna Lundbæk Pedersen, head of Airline Relations for Copenhagen Airports A/S.

The backdrop for the expansion in the market for air travel between the United States and Copenhagen is the strong ties between trade and industry in Scandinavia and the United States, along with a growing number of tourists and cruise passengers visiting Denmark and Scandinavia.
