Don’t’ forget the plastic bag

During the past four months, Copenhagen Airport has handed out one million free plastic bags following the introduction of the new EU rules on liquids in carry-on baggage. The airport has stopped handing out free bags, which can now be purchased from many supermarkets and shops.

The EU rules on liquids in carry-on baggage have been in force for almost four months, and most passengers are now aware that they are only allowed to carry limited quantities of liquids in a sealed one-litre plastic bag when they go through security control at the airport.

Passengers are responsible for acquiring approved bags themselves, but when the rules came into force in November last year, no indications were made of where the bags could be purchased. In order to help passengers, Copenhagen Airport bought one million bags which have since then been handed out for free at the airport. This service has now come to an end.

A great help at the start

"The availability of free bags at the airport has been a great help to passengers,

airlines and the airport’s security screeners during the initial period when everybody had to get used to the new rules and procedures," said Susanne Frank, Passenger Manager, Copenhagen Airports A/S.

"Approved bags are now available from stores such as Bilka, Føtex, A-Z and Matas, as well as at shops at the airport. Therefore, we will now stop handing out free bags," said Susanne Frank.

Prepare from home

Susanne Frank urges passengers to decide already from home whether they need to carry liquids in their carry-on baggage. It is easiest to pack all liquids and liquid-like substances in the baggage to be checked in at the airport.

"The airport recommends that passengers who need to carry liquids in their carry-on baggage familiarise themselves with the rules, buy some bags and put the bottles with liquids into the bag from home. This ensures that passengers are ready to check in and go through security already when they arrive at the airport," said Susanne Frank.
