Copenhagen Airport is seeking to attract more routes

At an international conference in Sofia, Bulgaria, 29 airlines were interested in hearing about the opportunities of opening new routes out of Copenhagen Airport.

Copenhagen Airports attended the Regional Europe conference in Sofia, Bulgaria from 13 to 15 May. The main focus of the conference, an offspring of the Routes conference, which was hosted by Copenhagen Airports in 2005, is to develop routes between European destinations.

“The establishment of the Regional Europe conference reflects the growing interest in meeting the airlines. We are very optimistic after the conference. Route development is long-range work, and new routes are often the result of several years’ persistent work. However, concrete new routes were discussed at the conference, which we will seen be able to announce,” said Ole Wieth Christensen, Route Development Manager at Copenhagen Airports.

Abolition of passenger tax plays a major role

Copenhagen Airports and airline representatives had pre-arranged meetings for the Regional Europe conference. At these meetings, the airport’s route developers presented specific proposals for new routes and for optimising existing routes. These proposals were presented to the individual airlines on the basis of analyses and Copenhagen Airports’ thorough knowledge of Denmark and the Øresund region.

“The great interest was partly due to the main Routes conference, which covers the whole world, being held in Copenhagen in 2005. This gave the airlines an opportunity to learn more about Copenhagen and the Scandinavian market. Moreover, the abolition of the Danish government’s passenger tax plays a major role. The tax of DKK 75 per passenger was abolished completely as from 1 January 2007, which has been a major point in our sales talks,” said Ole Wieth Christensen, Route Development Manager at Copenhagen Airports.
