Metro service to Copenhagen Airport

Crown Prince Frederik will cut the ribbon and send off the first Metro train towards the Copenhagen city centre Metro station of “Kongens Nytorv”, when the third phase of the Copenhagen Metro is officially opened on Friday, 28 September 2007. This will mark the opening of the last of the original three phases, including five new stations along the eastern part of the island of Amager with Copenhagen Airport as its terminus.

The “Lufthavnen” terminus will be the central point of the VIP event at which Crown Prince Frederik will cut the ribbon on Friday, 28 September at 2.50 pm to mark the opening of ordinary operations on the new line. The VIP guests will be the first to travel the entire length from “Kongens Nytorv” to “Lufthavnen”, which will bring people from the city centre to the airport in just 14 minutes.

An easy and modern mode of transport

Copenhagen Airports will be hosting the opening event, and they are looking forward to the big day.

"We are very pleased that our many passengers and the more than 20,000 people working at Copenhagen Airport will now have yet another alternative when choosing from the wide range of transport options to and from the airport," said Brian Petersen, CEO of Copenhagen Airports, who will be in place to welcome the guests on the festive day.

"The Metro is an easy, reliable and modern mode of transport which runs at intervals of 3-6 minutes during the day. I am confident that large numbers of our passengers and staff are looking forward to using it. Moreover, the Metro will make it easier for the Hilton’s many international guests to discover the Copenhagen city centre and enjoy its many attractions," Petersen added.

A station developed in a joint venture

Copenhagen Airports together with the Ørestadsselskabet and architects from Vilhelm Lauritzen as have created a Metro station whose design is in harmony with the other Metro stations, while also matching the rest of the airport’s facades through the use of marble, glass and granite. The airport station is above ground with access from the street level as well as via Terminal 3 at first-floor level, allowing passengers to transfer dry-shod between the station and the airport.

The station is airy and spacious with skylights and glazed facades, which give Metro passengers a grand view of the Øresund, the motorway and the airport during the short waits on the platform.

Future Metro service to the Copenhagen central station

The third phase with its five stations is the last of the originally planned phases. Since opening in 2002, the Metro has become very popular with the Copenhageners, and the Ørestadsselskabet expects passenger numbers to reach 43 million in 2007.

The Danish Parliament, the Folketinget, recently adopted an expansion of the Metro to include a socalled City Ring, scheduled to open in 2018, which will complete the route network by connecting the network to the Copenhagen central station and the "Østerport" station.

A day of celebration along the new line

It is not only the VIPs that will be celebrating on Friday, 28 September. Along the new line, the Ørestadsselskabet invites people to participate in the celebrations in the form of local opening events and various activities including a large family event at the "Amager Strand" station, (the station by the popular beach on the Øresund).

At night, there will be a free concert at "Femøren", a well-known and popular excursion spot that has also been chosen as the name of one of the stations on the line.
