Copenhagen Airport’s success as a cargo hub
The volume of air cargo at Copenhagen Airport is growing strongly and reached 380,000 tonnes in 2006. The world’s largest air cargo handler has set up its Scandinavian headquarters at Copenhagen Airport, and two new all cargo services to China opened during the past six months.
With 7% growth in cargo volumes over the past year, Copenhagen Airport (CPH) has consolidated its position as Scandinavia’s largest air cargo hub. In 2006, 380,000 tonnes of cargo was handled at Copenhagen Airport, up from 355,000 tonnes a year earlier.
The increase in cargo volumes was primarily driven by growing imports from Asia to Europe. Both Singapore Airlines and Korean Air Cargo have recorded growth in their all-cargo services from Singapore and Seoul to Copenhagen in recent years.
Two new services from China to Copenhagen
In 2006, a new service between Copenhagen and Asia was opened, when Air China Cargo began operating on the route Shanghai-Beijing-Copenhagen-Beijing with three weekly frequencies; and another Chinese airline, China Cargo Airlines launched its Shanghai-Copenhagen-Paris-Shanghai service in January this year, also with three weekly frequencies.
WFS has set up its new headquarters at CPH
As a result of Copenhagen Airport’s success in the air cargo market, one of the world’s largest air cargo handlers, Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), opened its new Scandinavian headquarters at CPH in 2006 with a new 6,200 square metre terminal. The new terminal, with direct access to the cargo stands, has an annual capacity of 60,000 tonnes of cargo.
