Copenhagen Airport to refurbish and expand Pier C

An extensive refurbishment and expansion of the capacity of Pier C will begin sometime in September. The project, involving a total investment of DKK 190 million, will include a new arrivals storey, larger lounges for passengers and a more efficient use of aircraft stands.

In future, passengers at Copenhagen Airport will experience a more pleasant and efficient atmosphere when they travel between Copenhagen Airport and a non-EU destination. New and tighter regulatory requirements mean that the flows of incoming non-EU passengers and departing passengers will be separated. Copenhagen Airport will be investing in a new and comprehensive arrivals floor in Pier C and in providing more space in the lounges.

The refurbishment will include additional seating, more space and more efficient flows for both passengers and airlines. About a third of all passengers at Copenhagen Airport go through Pier C when travelling mainly to and from overseas destinations.

A passenger-friendly solution

"We worked a long time to find a permanent solution that meets the functional requirements of the authorities. However, we decided to go even further and are also refurbishing and expanding the pier, and this will help enhance the general passenger-friendliness and efficiency of the airport," said Niels Brink Laursen, project manager in Copenhagen Airport’s Real Estate Department.

The first phase of the building process, which will begin in September 2007, is an expansion of some of the lounge areas used by passengers before boarding.

"We are expanding three lounges by a total of 1000 square metres and refurbishing two others to make more space and improve facilities for the growing number of overseas passengers. The extra space will be used for more seating and also help create an overall feeling of more daylight, space and friendliness," added Laursen. Moreover, the refurbishment and changes will change the passenger flow, with non-EU incoming passengers being routed through glass corridors to avoid contact with departing passengers in the lounges.

New arrivals floor and more flexible aircraft stands

The more demanding construction work will begin in the winter half of the year, when the new passenger arrivals storey will be added above the existing corridor, to be used exclusively for passengers arriving from non-EU destinations.

“The new storey will be built at second-floor level; it will be 150 metres long and have almost 920 square metres of floor space.  The new floor will make it easier for passengers to find their way because traffic in the corridor will be one way only,” said Laursen

Boost in quality and functionality

The new arrivals floor will be airy and welcoming, with windows and large glass walls with views out over airport areas.

"We are refurbishing Pier C so both passengers and airlines will see a boost in quality and functionality at Copenhagen Airport. Overall, the refurbishment of Pier C will improve people’s general perception of Copenhagen Airport, with our customers enjoying a more flexible, efficient and comfortable time here," commented Laursen.

Moreover, new passport control and security screening points will be set up in the access area to the pier.  The more demanding part of the construction work will primarily be done at night, when there is the least traffic and fewest passengers.

The refurbishment of Pier C is scheduled for completion in September 2008; the project will involve a total investment of DKK 190 million.
