New security checkpoint opened before the airport’s busy season

Danish Minister of Finance Thor Pedersen today opened Copenhagen Airport’s new, central security checkpoint to passengers. The new checkpoint doubles capacity and makes it faster for passengers to get through security. Moreover, the opening marks the beginning of Copenhagen Airport’s peak season, so passengers should consult the airport’s checklist before going to the airport.

The busy summer season is coming up, and Copenhagen Airports A/S has changed and expanded the airport since last year’s peak season. On 1 June, the new, central security checkpoint was opened, replacing the two existing security checkpoints in Terminal 2 and 3. The new security checkpoint has 16 tracks, which doubles the airport’s screening capacity.

The Minister of Finance was the first to be screened in the new facility

The Minister of Financed opened the security checkpoint to passengers ‛live’.

“Compared with other countries, we have many more international flight connections than the size of the population warrants. It is important to Copenhagen Airport to retain and expand its position as the hub of Scandinavia and the Baltic region. This continuously requires large investments in buildings, facilities and technical equipment which, together with very competent staff, are to ensure that the airport is efficient and has a high security and service level. The new, central security checkpoint, which we are opening today, is a good example of this,” said Thor Pedersen in his speech to mark the opening of the new facility.

The 16 tracks were staffed by 64 security screeners, and the Minister of Finance was the first to be screened, followed by passengers.

Through security in less than five minutes

Copenhagen Airports’ President and CEO, Niels Boserup, expressed his satisfaction with the improvement for passengers:

“Recent years’ stricter regulatory requirements have increased the security screening time, and there are new requirements to capacity, equipment and design to ensure that passengers have a good experience at security. Our target is that 95% of our passengers should be screened in less than five minutes, and that the maximum wait should be 20 minutes. With the new security checkpoint, we expect to meet this target, even during the busy summer period.”

Expect busy conditions – and follow the five-point checklist

Since last summer, the airport has invested in more capacity for passengers. In addition to the new security area, the airport has also doubled the number of check-in kiosks made available to the airlines free of charge. In spite of these investments, passengers should expect busy conditions at the airport:

“The summer season at the airport is like the Christmas season to the retail trade. Although both the airport and the airlines have joined efforts to prepare themselves for the summer season, we will be breaking the record this year with more than 40 peak travel days over the summer period. Therefore, it is a good idea to follow the five points in the checklist, including the airlines’ recommendations on when to be at the airport,” said Susanne Frank, Passenger Manager at Copenhagen Airport.
