Increased focus on new routes from Copenhagen

More than 50 airlines at an international conference in Dubai are interested in hearing about opportunities for new routes out of Copenhagen Airport.

Last year, Copenhagen Airport hosted the Routes conference, the largest annual event in the aviation industry, where 1700 representatives of airports and airlines from all over the world meet to discuss new air traffic routes and route networks.

This year, Routes is being held in Dubai on 17-19 September, and Copenhagen Airport will be following up on its success as host last year with a massive push at the conference.

More than 50 airlines have already agreed to meet with Copenhagen Airport representatives in Dubai.

“Routes is the event of the year in the aviation industry and the premier sales

forum for airports. We’re really happy about the great interest airlines are showing in us,” says Copenhagen Airports CEO Niels Boserup.

One of the reasons for all the interest is that airlines learned more about Copenhagen Airport and the Scandinavian market at last year’s conference. Another major reason for the interest is the repealing of the DKK 75 per passenger tax, which was cut in half at the turn of the year 2005-2006 and will be completely abolished effective 1 January 2007.

“We’re already seeing results from the tax being cut in half, in the form of new airlines, cheaper fares and more passengers. Once the tax has been completely abolished at the start of next year, it will be even more attractive to fly out of Copenhagen,” says Boserup.

More than 2000 delegates from 300 airlines and 650 airports will be attending Routes in Dubai.

How Routes works:

Routes is the world’s largest gathering of decision-makers in the aviation industry.

At the heart of Routes are 25,000 20-minute-long meetings agreed upon in advance between representatives of airports and airlines. The 20-minute time limit for each meeting is strictly observed, with loudspeaker announcements in the huge conference halls when the meetings begin and end. At the meetings, airport route developers present specific proposals for new routes to an airline, proposals that are based on analyses and local market knowledge.

In addition to the formal meetings, Routes includes many informal meetings, exhibitions, presentations and social events.
