Print out your boarding pass at home

Now you can print out your own boarding pass and skip the wait at the check-in counter. Starting today, passengers travelling with KLM or Air France can use their computer to print out their own boarding pass at home and go direct to the security checkpoint at the airport.

KLM, Air France and Copenhagen Airports A/S are launching 2D home-printed boarding passes today for passengers flying out of Copenhagen Airport with their airlines.

"We are very happy to be able to offer our passengers leaving Copenhagen Airport with this service," said Tom de Vos and Kerstin Bersztel of KLM and Air France. "We hope that passengers at Copenhagen Airport will welcome the home-printed boarding passes."

Three easy steps at the web site of one of these airlines allow you to choose your plane seat and print out your boarding pass as much as 30 hours before and up to one hour before your departure.

Better security

Developed by Copenhagen Airports, the system behind the new scanner automatically checks to make sure that the boarding pass was not used previously. If a passenger prints out more than one boarding pass at home, only the first one to be used will be accepted by the system.

The system also checks whether or not the departure shown is actually from the airport, which helps passengers with more than one stopover to avoid using the wrong boarding pass at the security checkpoint.

"We believe it is very important for passenger flow at the airport to be as smooth as possible, so we are very happy that our passengers can now use the home-printed boarding passes," said Copenhagen Airports Passenger Manager Susanne Frank. "We are seeing a great deal of interest from other airlines who would like to become part of the scheme as well, and we hope that even more airlines will be able to offer their passengers this service in the near future."

A 2D barcode contains the same data several times over in both the horizontal and vertical directions, which makes the code more robust than a 1D one. The scanner can still read the information, even if there is a scratch on the disk.

The 2D bar code contains far more information than the traditional 1D bar code as we know it from the labels of the products we buy in the shops.
