Leading air cargo operator opens new terminal
The growing importance of Copenhagen Airport in the air cargo market has made one of the world’s largest air cargo operators, Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), establish its Scandinavian head office at Copenhagen Airport.
On 1 May, WFS will bring into use a new 6,200 square metre cargo terminal at the eastern end of the airport with airside access to the cargo stands. The new terminal has an annual capacity of 60,000 tonnes of cargo and is built on land leased to WFS by Copenhagen Airports on a 30-year lease.
“We have chosen to set up in Copenhagen Airport as this airport is increasingly used as a hub for air cargo. Here, we have access to a large route network and an excellent infrastructure right outside our doors,” said WFS director Yves Pinoy. WFS operates 100 air cargo terminals worldwide and handled 3.5 million tonnes of cargo last year.
More cargo flights
“Copenhagen Airport is making great progress as a cargo hub in terms of increased volumes of cargo, more departures and a number of new destinations. Last year, both Korean Air Cargo and Singapore Airlines Cargo increased their traffic on Copenhagen Airport, and there are currently 12 weekly flights out of Copenhagen with large Boeing 747 cargo aircraft.
“With an additional air cargo operator, we will have even better opportunities of attracting more airlines,” commented Copenhagen Airport cargo manager Lars Korup.
He concurrently pointed out that from the turn of the year, charges were lowered for cargo flights out of Copenhagen when the take-off charge was reduced by 3% and a 200-tonne cap was introduced for all-cargo flights.
Last year, Copenhagen Airport handled 355,087 tonnes of cargo, which represented a 5.8% year-on-year increase.
