New rules for carry-on baggage on the way

Rules limiting the amount of liquids allowed in carry-on baggage will become effective on 6 November 2006. Duty-free sales will not be affected by these changes. You can help make the transition to the new rules smoother by following the advice below.

The EU has decided to introduce new rules for carry-on baggage applicable to all departures from airports within the EU. The new rules will come into effect on 6 November 2006.

The most important change for the passengers will be the restrictions on the amount of liquids allowed through security. Articles bought at the airport after the screening points (including spirits, perfume and other liquids) are exempt from the new rules. You may also buy duty-free items at the airport as before. The only change is that the articles will be provided to you in a sealed bag and that you must keep the articles in that bag until you reach your final destination.

“Well-informed passengers are crucial to traffic running smoothly. Whenever we receive new rules from the national authorities, we and the airlines will work together to inform passengers. Right now we ask passengers to acquaint themselves with the rules that apply as of 6 November,” says Vice President Mogens Kornbo, who is in charge of the security checkpoints at Copenhagen Airport. The security staff will also be allocated extra resources to provide more assistance to passengers.

Advice to passengers

  • If you plan to check your baggage, you should pack any liquids and toilet bag in your checked baggage. If you do so, you will not have to take any further steps to comply with the new rules.

  • If you are only travelling with carry-on baggage and you want to pack liquids, you should pack only liquid containers with a maximum capacity of 100 millilitres each in your carry-on baggage. Such containers must be packed in a transparent plastic bag that holds a maximum of one litre. The authorities have not yet provided information as to what bags can be used for this purpose or where you can buy such bags. As soon as Copenhagen Airport receives this information, we will notify our passengers.

  • When you get to the airport, Copenhagen Airports and the airlines will make sure that you are reminded about the new rules before you check in and go through security. This gives you one last opportunity to re-pack your carry-on baggage.

According to the new rules, you are allowed to pack the following liquids in your carry-on baggage:

Liquids, gels and aerosols, not more than 100 millilitres or 1/10 litre per container.

You may pack several containers (bottles, cans, tubes, etc.), but they must all fit into a transparent, sealed one-litre plastic bag.

The bag must be re-sealable.
