Copenhagen Airport is going to build a new central security checkpoint

Copenhagen Airport continues to invest in airport security. Currently, the number of security staff is being increased, and a new central security checkpoint will be established in the course of 2007. The change will increase capacity and flexibility, and thus reduce waiting times.

The security-check facilities for passengers at Copenhagen Airport need improvement. In the course of the coming year, the airport will therefore establish a new central security checkpoint to replace the existing three checkpoints in Terminal 2, Terminal 3 and the Arcade respectively.

The establishment of the new central checkpoint will cost DKK 200 million and comes on top of recent years’ large investments to comply with stricter regulatory requirements to airport security. Moreover, the airport has doubled the number of security staff to 660 over a three-year period, and a number of additional staff are currently being recruited and trained.

Flexibility and capacity

By establishing a central security checkpoint, Copenhagen Airport will achieve greater capacity and increased flexibility, which will translate into better service to passengers.

“We are currently experiencing situations with long waits at the security checkpoint in one terminal and almost no waiting time in the other terminal. We cannot move staff back and forth within minutes, we can only suggest that they choose another checkpoint,” said Mogens Kornbo, Vice President, Copenhagen Airports A/S.

“The central checkpoint will solve that problem, as passengers will then automatically distribute themselves more equally in the “tracks” available,” said Kornbo, who expects that the change will lead to shorter waits during peak periods like those we are seeing at the airport right now.

Future demands

In recent moths, CPH has investigated the options available and worked with the project, which is now materialising into project descriptions and plans. The security checkpoint will be built at the first-floor level in the Arcade with access from both Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 via skywalks.

The security checkpoint will have new facilities which will make it easier for passengers to prepare for the security check and thus help reduce waiting times.

“We wish to continue to provide good service and quality to our passengers without compromising security. As a result of the stricter regulatory requirements, we consider it necessary to build a new central security checkpoint, which will be prepared for some of the requirements we may face in future,” said Kornbo.

This is one of the proposals for the facade of the new central security checkpoint in the Arcade.
