Strong growth in traffic to Turkey

Turkish Airlines

From late May, flights to Turkey will almost double. The number of scheduled flights to Turkey is going to increase from eight to thirteen per week. Turkish Airlines will increase its weekly frequencies from seven to twelve, whilst SAS will continue to have one weekly flight to Istanbul.

In addition to the increased number of daily flights, we are also seeing a general increase in scheduled traffic to Turkey. Traffic rose by 25% in January and February compared with January and February of 2004.  But a sharp rise is also seen in the number of passengers travelling to Turkey seen over a longer period of time: over a five-year period, the number of passengers travelling to Turkey has risen from 154.000 to 290,000.

“If we look at traffic to Turkey from 1999 to 2004, we see a growth rate of 88%, and there are no indications that this growth will peter off in the near future. Right now, Turkish Airlines are expanding at Copenhagen Airport, and we are naturally pleased with their decision. We are seeing a new trend of increasing numbers of what we call “ethnic routes”, i.e. routes to destinations aimed at serving people living in Denmark, in this case Turks who have family and friends in other places than in the large cities of Istanbul and Ankara,” comments Ole Wieth Christensen, route developer at Copenhagen Airports.

With the new routes, Turkish Airlines will have one daily flight to Istanbul, three weekly flights  to Ankara and one to each of Konya and Kayseri.
