The Alps draw more travellers
Ski holidays in the Alps are drawing increasing numbers of passengers to the Copenhagen-Geneva route, according to new traffic statistics from Copenhagen Airport. In January and February of this year, the number of passengers on the Geneva route was 26% above the level seen in the same two months of 2004. The total number of passengers on the route was 22,000 in February and 17,900 in January.
This Swiss city is the starting point for many skiing holidays in France and Switzerland, and this is reflected in the travel pattern out of Copenhagen.
“Geneva is a typical winter destination, with ski tourists boosting passenger numbers by up to 40% in the months of January, February and March compared with the other months of the year,” says Henrik Juel Simonsen, Airline Relations department manager at Copenhagen Airports A/S.
SAS has three frequencies on the route to Geneva on weekdays, five on Saturdays and four on Sundays, whilst Maersk Air has services to Geneva daily, except on Sundays. Maersk Air began operating on the route in November of last year.
“The trend in passenger numbers shows that a growing number of passengers are using Geneva as the starting point for their skiing holidays in the Alps. The increased competition on the route this winter has also added to the growth in passenger numbers,” comments Juel Simonsen.
