Christmas comes to Copenhagen Airport

Porcelain painter Jette Gustavsen      There is no Christmas without the fragrance of fir trees and candied almonds, sweet strains of Christmas songs, hearts and light – not even if you are travelling this December. If you walk through the airport this month, it will be difficult for you not to catch a bit of Christmas spirit on your way. The airport is festively decorated to celebrate the holidays once again this year.

Last year we decked the airport with a total of 78,620 Christmas lights; this year the atmosphere glows both figuratively and literally with an entire 99 thousand of them, illuminating both the inside and outside of the airport terminals. A new feature is the avenue of light: Christmas lighting stretching all the way from Amager Landevej to the Hilton Hotel.

Father Christmas, the pianist and the candied almond maker

If you would like to see craftsmanship at work in making some Christmas wishes come true, the airport is currently host to one of the porcelain painters of the Royal Copenhagen Mega Musel design. Every Friday and Sunday, Father Christmas also drops by to hear Christmas wishes and indulge children and children at heart on their way into or away from Denmark.

Next to the tax-free shop in Terminal 2, you can stop by any day before Christmas and join the pianist in singing Christmas songs with an international flavour.  At the same spot, you can also purchase freshly candied almonds or homemade boiled sweets and take a look around at the holiday marketplace containing just about everything a Christmas heart could wish for.     Jens Balleby

And should you be lucky enough to have a ticket for a flight leaving between nine and ten in the morning on 13 December, the Saint Annae School’s Lucia Day procession might just light your way to the gate.
