Copenhagen Airports to host world conference

Routes – the World Route Development Forum – announced at its event currently taking place in Madrid that Copenhagen has won the bid to host Routes in 2005.

The forum, the biggest gathering of airlines and airports in the world, will be hosted by Copenhagen Airports in Denmark from 25 – 27 September 2005.

The airport group was up against two other strong contenders and secured the deal close in partnership with Copenhagen´s tourism authorities.

By hosting Routes, Copenhagen also aims to increase its profile as being the one airport that services two countries, with many travellers to and from Sweden using the airport, the biggest in Scandinavia.

Merete Rønde, Passenger Director at Copenhagen Airports, said: “We are very proud to have succeeded to attract Routes to Copenhagen. With so much competition to win airline business, this will allow us to showcase our position as an important hub with a well-developed route network.”

Copenhagen Airports aims to use its investment in Hainan, Meilan airport in China, to attract more representatives to Routes from the Asian aviation industry.

The aim of next year´s event is to build on the success of Madrid, which witnessed an unprecedented level of delegates coming together from across the globe to discuss air service development.

Mike Howarth, managing director of Routes said, “We are delighted Routes is going to Copenhagen next year. Copenhagen is a beautiful city and will have a lot to offer the delegates.  We aim for next year´s forum to be the biggest yet, with a target attendance of 1,500.”

Facts on Routes

Routes, the World Route Development Forum, has been held since 1995 and takes place in late September each year to ensure that all routes are in place for the IATA Schedules Conference in November.

This year’s Routes conference was held on 26-28 September in Madrid and was hosted by the airport association AENA. More than 250 different airlines and 450 airports, i.e. some 1,300 delegates from five continents, participated in about 10,000 pre-arranged meetings.

The World Route Development Forum has only been held in Scandinavia once before, namely in Oslo 1997.
