Newcastle International Airport extension opened
New shops and restaurants, 1,200 seats, a new large Internet lounge and a more light and spacious environment: Those are some of the facilities offered to passengers following a thorough refurbishment and 3,000 sq.m. extension of the departure terminal at Newcastle International Airport, which is co-owned by Copenhagen Airports A/S.

The cost of the project was about GBP 7 million, and it is an important element of the development of the north-east UK airport that has taken place since Copenhagen Airport A/S acquired a 49% stake in the airport in May 2001. The International Department of Copenhagen Airports acted as consultants and partners on the project.
“We work closely with Newcastle International and have been involved in all aspects of the development of the terminal, including the design and concepts,” says Project Manager Michael Johansson of the International Department of Copenhagen Airports A/S.
One of the reasons for the extension of Newcastle International is the growing number of passengers. The airport is by now the ninth largest airport in the UK and the fastest growing airport among the 15 largest UK airports. Last year, Newcastle International broke the 4 million passenger record, up from 3.4 million passengers in 2003. For 2004, the passenger number is expected to reach 5 million.
The growth at Newcastle International Airport comes partly from the growing number of low cost carriers at the airport, including easyJet, Ryanair, Hapag Lloyd Express and Flybe; but charter traffic is also growing.
The extension of the terminal will ensure better service and more facilities for passengers. Most of the airport’s shops and restaurants are now located in the transit area – as is the case at Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup – rather than in the check-in area, as is the case in most other UK regional airports. This gives passengers more freedom and time to shop and use the many facilities.
Against the backdrop of the extension of the terminal and the growing number of passengers, Newcastle International expects revenue from the shops and restaurants to grow by about 30% from 2004 to 2005.

“We are convinced that our passengers will enjoy the exceptional quality and range of facilities we now have on offer. With the unveiling of the new terminal extension, Newcastle International now offers one of the best airport environments in Europe,” says John Parkin.
