New customs regulations from 1 January 2004
The restrictions on the import of spirits and tobacco in force until now have been abolished for goods purchased in ordinary trade in another EU country. However, goods may only be imported duty-free for own consumption, which – according to the EU’s guiding volumes – means a maximum of 10 litres of spirits and 800 cigarettes or the like.
The changes are part of the new customs regulations that came into force on 1 January 2004. The new guidelines also brought an end to the so-called 24-hour rule.
Under the new regulations, the length of your stay outside Denmark no longer affects whether spirits may be imported duty-free. On the other hand, your destination still has an effect on the duty-free allowance as restrictions still apply on entry from non-EU countries, including the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
The customs regulations described above are for residents of Denmark.
