A thousand Christmas lights are lit…
or, more precisely, 78,620 Christmas lights are illuminating the airport this year: 39,820 outside and 38,800 inside the buildings.

Making the airport sparkle like this is not something that can be done overnight.
It has taken two days and two nights to cover wreaths and trees in the terminals with lights. |
As for the trees outside, reaching the number of lights we have today was actually a three-stage process.
In 2002, lights were put up in front of the office block between Terminal 2 and Terminal 1; a year later, lights were installed all the way to the western end near Terminal 1, and this year, lights have been installed even further, all the way to the last roundabout before the Amager Landevej road.
Each year, all the lights are taken down again after Christmas so that we can prune the trees.

Next year, Copenhagen Airport staff will again begin putting up lights in the trees in early October to get everything ready for 15 November, the date when the outdoor lights are turned on. |
It takes a total of 500 hours to unpack the lights, hang them up, take them down and pack them back into their containers again.
