Number of low-cost passengers at Copenhagen Airport doubled
The number of low-cost passengers is expected to exceed one million by the end of the year, which is twice as many as last year. easyJet announce yet another route out of Copenhagen.
In 2002, Copenhagen Airport had 530,000 low-cost passengers, i.e. 3% of all passengers chose to use a low-cost carrier. During the first nine months of 2003, this number rose to 840,000, representing an increase to 6% of total traffic, and the trend looks set to continue. Accordingly, Copenhagen Airport expects to reach a level of more than one million low-cost passengers by the end of the year.
easyJet have announced today that they will expand their route network with yet another route out of Copenhagen. The route to Bristol will be easyJet’s third route out of Copenhagen.
Commenting on the trend, Trille Tang Dalsgaard, head of Airline Relations at Copenhagen Airports, says:
“More and more passengers choose to put together their own trips. Low-cost airlines offer passengers a new kind of flexibility, and they cater to a new market of people who did not usually consider flying before because of the cost. That’s why we are seeing a natural market expansion.
Generally, the industry is recording a huge growth in the number of low-cost passengers, and if we compare ourselves with other airports serving low-cost airlines, our 6% level is just the beginning here in Denmark. Almost 40% of all British domestic passengers are now travelling low-cost, and from the turn of the year, we expect this figure to rise to 50%. The same trend is seen in the Scandinavian market, where all airlines, especially the domestic carriers, now offer the lowest possible air fares. All in all, these developments will result in an increase in passenger numbers.”
