Preliminary assessment planned for Roskilde Airport

In response to the growing interest for traffic out of Roskilde Airport, Copenhagen Airports A/S is now preparing an EIA (environmental impact assessment) report.

Niels Boserup, President & CEO of Copenhagen Airports A/S says about the report:
”The low-cost airlines have shown particularly strong interest in using Roskilde Airport. At the moment, we’re unable to meet the low-cost airlines’ needs. The fact that we’re having the EIA carried out does not mean that we will be expanding the airport. This is a preliminary assessment we’re having made to see whether expanding the airport is a good idea and if it can be done in an environmentally appropriate manner.

A long, multi-phased process

The assessment is being carried out by the planning authorities, the Greater Copenhagen Authority. An EIA is based on a specific procedure involving a number of studies and descriptions of different environmental factors, as well as a number of hearings in the local area. The initial hearing phase, the idea phase, comprising proposals from the local population and other interested parties, is expected to take place in August – September 2003. The EIA report will be presented at a public hearing at the end of 2004. The Greater Copenhagen Authority will present the final results of the assessment in the beginning of 2005, and a potential approval will be co-announced by the Authority and the County of Roskilde.

Facts about EIA

An Environmental Impact Assessment comprises a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impact of an expansion, a report on the physical design of the facility and its socio-economic consequences. An EIA may then lead to planning approval and environmental approval. An EIA includes measurements of 19 different factors, such as air, noise, soil, groundwater, traffic conditions, surface water and wastewater and cultural heritage.
