Copenhagen Airport to get sophisticated surface movement radar system

Copenhagen Airports A/S invests DKK 50 million in sophisticated surface movement radar system, which will enhance safety and make it easier to control moving aircraft on runways and taxiways and at gates.

- We have had a surface movement radar system at Copenhagen Airport since 1986 says Hans Christian Stigaard, vice president and manager of the Traffic Department at Copenhagen Airports. It is not a requirement, but almost all major airports have a surface movement radar system to increase safety and reduce delays. The new system will be able to identify anything that moves on the ground, and not only as a blip on a screen. Aircraft will also be identified on the screen by call sign, type and airline; the same applies to fire vehicles and other material used in an airfield. The new system will also be able to generate automatic warnings in critical situations.

Dutch company Hitt is the principal supplier for the project, which involves supplies from a number of companies, including Danish company Terma. The system will be implemented in a phased project, and the first part of the system will be ready for use in April 2005.
