New coastal road along Copenhagen Airport

Copenhagen County, Copenhagen Airports A/S and the Municipality of Dragør are joining forces to open a new road and bicycle path running east of the airport. At the same time, the airport buys almost seven acres of commercial land from the Municipality of Dragør.

Coastal road to open in October

The eastern and southern communities on the island of Amager will now be connected by a road running to the east of the airport. A two-lane road and a bi-directional bicycle path will be established from the Øresund motorway (by the roundabout) to Dragør (by A.P. Møllers Allé). The coastal road will be a county road and will be constructed as an extension of the existing road. The road is scheduled to open in mid-October, and the three parties will share the investment between them.

County Mayor Vibeke Storm Rasmussen comments, “The County has long sought to have a path constructed east of the airport. This wish will now be fulfilled, and Dragør will get a new access road. The funding of the project will be provided jointly by the parties, and we are very pleased with the commitment shown to this project by the airport and Dragør for the benefit – not only of southern Amager – but also for the citizens and businesses of the region as a whole. The bicycle path east of the airport is a good recreational option which has long been high on County Council list of priorities and also gives the many people living in Dragør and working at the airport the option of riding their bikes to work. Moreover, the project will benefit the great commercial potential in the area. We are very pleased with the project, which will provide an efficient infrastructure for businesses and commuters to the east and south of the airport.”

Road safety will be improved.

Niels Boserup, CEO of Copenhagen Airports makes the following comments on the project, “The County and Dragør have long wanted a path around the airport and we are pleased to be able to help our neighbours make this wish come true. For the airport, it was also vital to find a solution in which the security requirements are met and in which we retain our access to the airport’s emergency harbour. We have succeeded in finding a solution that is satisfactory to all three parties.”

Asger Larsen, Mayor of Dragør comments, “It’s a bit unusual that a municipality contributes to a county road, most of which is located in a different municipality. We are doing it because the coastal road will be of strategic importance to Dragør. Currently, our many commuters only have the option of using Englandsvej. The new project will make Englandsvej less of a bottleneck as it is expected that about 20-25% of the traffic there will move to the coastal road. The project will also improve road safety.

Today, many trucks to the south gate of the airport are forced use a road that is also used as a school road. In future, this traffic can use the coastal road. Moreover, for Dragør the new road will be a second access road to the motorway and an attractive alternative for cars going to the city centre or to the south or west of Copenhagen as well as for cars to Sweden via the Øresund Bridge. On top of this, our citizens will have a direct bus connection to the airport and thus also to regional and international trains as well as to the metro, when it is extended to the airport. And people in the region will have the option of riding their bikes to beautiful Dragør, a ride that will offer views of the activities in the busy Copenhagen Airport as well as views of the Øresund.”

Copenhagen Airport buys commercial land in Dragør

At the same time, the airport buys almost seven acres of commercial land from the Municipality of Dragør. The property is located next to the airport’s south gate.

Niels Boserup, CEO of Copenhagen Airports, makes the following comments on the transaction, “We are buying this land as part of our strategy for the airport’s real property development. The area borders on the southern part of the airport where airport-related businesses such as Maersk Air and Sterling are already based. This new land will give us an opportunity to develop real property for other airport-related businesses in the southern area of the airport – outside the perimeter fence. This is consistent with our focus on real property development in the northern and eastern areas of the airport.”

Asger Larsen, Mayor of Dragør comments, “We are very pleased to see this transaction open up for the sale of our commercial land. To the Municipality of Dragør, commercial development in the area is closely related to the development of the coastal road. The commercial district in Dragør by A.P. Møllers Allé will now become one of the most attractive areas in the region, located close to the airport and efficient infrastructure facilities. Dragør therefore plans to intensify the marketing of the rest of A.P. Møllers Allé, and we expect to see major interest in the area.”
