‘Girls at the Airport’ on stamps
On Wednesday, 13 March, ‘Girls at the Airport’ will be on featured on Danish stamps
They see us off and greet us when we return – Hanne Varming’s bronze-girls sculpture at Copenhagen Airport. ‘Girls at the Airport’, as the sculpture is called, has become a popular attraction for travellers, who have adopted a new tradition of patting "the girls" affectionately on the behind for good luck.
We now also have the opportunity to show them to the rest of the world. On Wednesday, 13 March, new Danish stamps will be available featuring ‘Girls at the Airport’. The girls are shown both from the front and back on two different stamps worth 5 and 4 Danish kroner respectively.
Per Kruse was the photographer for the project, Morten Stürup handled the composition and typography, and Lars Sjööblom made the steel engraving. The stamps are printed using a combination of steel engraving and photogravure.
Art in public spaces
Every third year, the Nordic countries launch stamps under a common theme. Varming’s sculpture was chosen to represent Denmark this year.
"When the Danish Post Office – Post Denmark – selected illustrations for two pan-Nordic stamps on the theme ‘contemporary art decorating public spaces’, Hanne Varming’s beautiful sculpture at Copenhagen Airport was a natural choice: The sculpture is beautiful, and it is located in a place where a large number of people have the chance to see and enjoy it. We at Post Denmark considered the sculpture so well suited for the purpose that we decided to show it both from the front and from the back instead of choosing two different sculptures," says Lise Froulund, programme co-ordinator for stamps with Post Denmark.
With 18.1 million passengers passing through Copenhagen Airport per year, the airport is not just a major traffic hub, it is also acts as a well-attended exhibition hall for Nordic art. Hanne Varming’s girls, who arrived at Terminal 3 in 1999, are only one of the airport’s 40 or so works of art seen by the 50,000 passengers who pass by every day.
