Copenhagen Airport launches annual design festival
Copenhagen Airports A/S will be focusing specially on Scandinavian design between 9 August and 22 September at a design festival, which will feature a number of exhibitions of classic furniture designed by Danish architects as well as modern design. The designer furniture will be used as part of the interior decoration of the airport throughout the festival.
Bringing design out into the light
"At Copenhagen Airport, we have always focused on integrating art and design in the general interior design. As a passenger, you may not think about it all that much, but I have no doubt that it has a favourable effect on how people experience spending time at Copenhagen Airport. We intend to use this annual festival to bring attention to the airport’s space, architecture and Scandinavian design for a while," says Niels Boserup, President and CEO of the Copenhagen Airports company.
Modern and classic
For the festival, Danish architect partners Tom Lundberg and Stig Marvits have been asked to integrate modern and classic Scandinavian design in the well-known surroundings of the airport. Lundberg and Marvits are known, among other things, for their design of the shops in the street Niels Hemmingsensgade in the Copenhagen city centre. Their light colours have set the fashion for shop design, and they have had great success with their interior design in fashion shops and restaurants in Paris and London.
Watch the production of designer products
The festival will feature classic furniture and products by architects Hans Wegner, Poul Kjærholm, Bruno Mathson, Poul Henningsen and products designed by Per Lütken, Kay Bojesen, Ursula Munch, Alvar Alto, Ole Mathiesen and Mogens Lassen. In addition, passengers may also be lucky enough to catch demonstrations of how the popular designs are produced, for instance how the "Cone" lamp designed by Poul Henningsen is assembled.
Design magazine
Copenhagen Airport will publish a design magazine for the festival. The magazine will contain interviews with the artists taking part in the festival and provide inspiration for the art, architecture and design that can be seen and bought at the airport during the design festival. The magazine will be an insert in the free Airport Magazine that is available at the airport.
Art and architecture guide
This year, Copenhagen Airport was rated best airport by the air traffic organisation IATA as well as the lifestyle magazine Wallpaper, and its focus on architecture, art and design played a role in winning these awards.
Furthermore, it should be mentioned that we have published a Guide to the Art and Architecture at Copenhagen Airport. The guide is available from the airport’s communications department or from the airport service information desks. The guide is free of charge and provides an overview of the art and architecture at the airport and contains a map showing the location of the objects as well as biographies of the artists and architects represented at the airport.
