The heart of the airport
The Operational Centre is the airport’s report centre and monitors round the clock what is going on at the airport.
The Operational Centre (OC) receives, records and coordinates calls about all events at the airport, great and small, around the clock. Each month, the OC handles some 20,000 radio and telephone calls concerning everything that happens at a large international airport.
The calls have to do with a wide spectrum of tasks ranging from alarm calls, ambulance responses and maintaining order at the airport to ordinary operational tasks. Frank Lønstrup Christensen, operational manager of the OC, explains:
“When something unusual occurs in the airport area, we receive reports from employees working at the airport. Our responsibility then is to ensure that the information is passed on to the relevant parties. Basically, we are one big coordinating unit,” he says.
Ensuring a calm and orderly atmosphere at the airport
The police are generally responsible for security at Copenhagen Airport, and the OC works together with the other security departments to ensure on, a practical level, that a calm and orderly atmosphere is maintained in the airport area.
In addition, the OC monitors the approximately 130 CCTV cameras in various locations at the airport. OC staff are growing steadily in numbers as stricter security regulations are introduced. The OC currently has 31 employees.
