Guidelines

Guidelines for animals shipped as cargo

Import of animals from third countries (non-EU countries)

Before shipping the animal:

1. You should check the import rules applicable to animals from the relevant non-EU country well in advance. You can check the import rules at the website of the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.

2. Contact the airline to get information on transport containers, on how to submit the animal, prices and other transport-related matters.

3. When travelling with animals to and from a third country, you must be aware of the border veterinarian inspection post’s opening hours. The border veterinarian inspection post is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the inspection of private shipments will only take place during this time period. If you want to avoid having your animal boarded in the kennel for an entire weekend, for instance, we recommend that you plan your trip so it fits in with the border veterinarian inspection post’s opening hours. See also the list of national public holidays as the border veterinarian inspection post will also be closed on these dates.

Contact the Border Veterinarian’s office

Animals arriving from a non-EU country must be checked upon arrival into the EU. The import must be notified to the Border Veterinarian not later than 24 hours before you want the check to be made.
