New cargo service to China
Copenhagen Airport’s position as a northern European cargo hub will be strengthened when yet another direct cargo service to China opens. The new service will bring the number of all-cargo services between Copenhagen and Asia to 17 per week.
Last year, the first direct cargo service between Copenhagen and China was opened, and not another service has been added. On Sunday, 7 January 2007, an MD-11F from China Cargo Airlines landed for the first time at Copenhagen Airport, which increasingly serves as a cargo hub to and from northern Europe, Russia and the Baltic states.
Growing imports from China
The number of all-cargo services between Copenhagen and destinations in Asia has increased in recent years as a result of substantial growth in the volume of cargo to be transported. The growth is especially driven by growing import of goods from China.
In future, China Cargo Airlines will operate three weekly frequencies on the route Shanghai-Beijing-Copenhagen-Paris-Shanghai. In addition, Air China Cargo has a service Shanghai-Beijing-Copenhagen-Beijing, Korean Air Cargo has a service to Seoul and Singapore Airlines serves Singapore, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai/Madras and Chicago – all of them with all-cargo Boeing 747 aircraft. Altogether, there are 17 all-cargo flights between Copenhagen and Asia per week.
Cap on charges for all-cargo flights
In the efforts to attract more cargo flights, Copenhagen Airport has introduced a cap on charges for cargo flights, to the effect all-cargo flights do not pay charges for the part of the weight that exceeds 200 tonnes.
