Spanish low-cost giant to fly from CPH

There will be even more competition on the popular route from Copenhagen to Barcelona when Europe’s fourth largest low cost carrier, Spanish-based Vueling, opens four weekly frequencies to Barcelona beginning in March next year.

Vueling will fly from Copenhagen to Barcelona’s El Prat Airport on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. In addition, the carrier will operate one to two weekly charter flights.

“We are very enthusiastic about starting to connect Denmark to Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, a leading location for international business and an attractive metropolis in which to spend a nice break. In addition, Danish passengers will be able to fly not only to Barcelona but also to all the connecting destinations that we offer from our hub at El Prat Airport” Alex Cruz, Vueling’s CEO, states.

As opposed to the conventional low-cost carriers, Vueling offers services such as transfers, an opportunity to buy extra leg space as well as bonus programmes. From Barcelona, Vueling offers connections to 44 destinations in Spain, such as Malaga, Tenerife, Bilbao and Mallorca.

Great perspectives
At Copenhagen Airport, Ole Wieth Christensen, CPH's Director of Airline Sales & Route Development, sees great perspectives in the new collaboration with Vueling, which is owned by Iberia:

“Not only will the fourth largest low-cost carrier in Europe be flying from Copenhagen Airport. It is also part of Vueling’s strategy that the airline is now moving into the northern European market. That is good news to Copenhagen Airport. It is also good news to our passengers that they will have yet another alternative on the route to Barcelona,” said Ole Wieth Christensen.

  • Vueling was founded in 2004 and today has 44 Airbus 320s and flies to 44 airports in 13 countries.
  • From March next year, five airlines will be operating non-stop services between Copenhagen and Barcelona: Vueling, SAS, Spanair, Cimber Sterling and Norwegian.
  • In the first nine months of 2011, 165.000 passengers travelled from Copenhagen to the capital of Catalonia
