MyTravel Airways’ charter service to Cape Town is the first of its kind out of Copenhagen and the longest distance ever flown using the same aircraft.

Among the first passengers on MyTravel Airways’ new direct service was a Swedish couple, Roland and Lena Lindén from Malmo, who celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary travelling to South Africa:

“We hadn’t actually imagined travelling that far, but we were convinced when we heard about this direct service to Cape Town. We are very excited about the trip and look forward to visiting ostrich farms, seeing the scenery, taking a safari and savouring the good food,” said the Swedish couple, who look forward to 15 days in South Africa.

A historic moment

On the maiden trip, all passengers were served champagne, juice and Danish-style almond cakes. Jan Vendelbo, CEO of Spies, gave a short inauguration speech before the ribbon was cut.

“This route inauguration is a historic day for charter operations. It is the first time a charter operator sends off a flight to Cape Town, the longest charter flight ever out of Copenhagen Airport. I was recently in Cape Town and I can assure you that one of the world’s best holiday destinations is awaiting you, with fantastic food and wine, beautiful scenery, safaris and golf. I wish you a very pleasant trip,” he said.

Shortly after Mr. Vendelbo’s speach, Dolana Faith Msimang, Ambassador of South Africa to Denmark, and Tom Clausen, CEO of MyTravel Airways, cut the ribbon, and the first passengers on the maiden trip began boarding the flight.

Denmark’s largest charter operator

The CEO of Copenhagen Airport praised MyTravel Airways and Spies for taking the initiative to a new overseas route,

“It is very positive for Copenhagen Airport when an airline opens a direct overseas service, and charter traffic is an important part of traffic at our airport. MyTravel Airways is the largest charter operator at Copenhagen Airport, and we are very pleased that they are taking new initiatives. South Africa is a very exciting and attractive holiday destination, and we expect to see growing traffic to the area in the years to come," said Brian Petersen.

The approximately 360 passengers on board the Airbus 330 had a fuel stop in Cairo, before continuing to Cape Town.

MyTravel Airways will operate ten flights to Cape Town per year in the period from 10 November to 26 March.
