Low cost airlines move east

On Thursday, 13 May, the first low-cost service out of Copenhagen Airport to Berlin will be launched. EasyJet will use Airbus 319s seating 150 passengers on the service. The low cost airline will have two daily frequencies from Copenhagen to Berlin.

Smart Wings, the Czech low cost airline, makes its entry in Copenhagen on 1 May, when it begins a once-daily service to Prague using Boeing B-737-500s seating 111 passengers.

Sterling has offered low cost services three days a week from Copenhagen to Prague since 1 April.

“Many travellers choose the cheapest alternative when going to Prague and especially to Berlin. So far, the cheapest alternatives have been bus, train or car. With the new low cost services, we expect that many more travellers will choose to fly when they go to the capitals of the former Eastern Europe," says Trille Tang Dalsgaard, head of Airline Relations at Copenhagen Airports.

The two new services are a clear sign that low cost traffic is growing. Over a period of just a few years, low-cost traffic at Copenhagen Airport has grown to 6.5% of the total traffic volume in 2003. In March 2004, this percentage had increased to 9.3%.
