New York Times: ”Go to Copenhagen”
Copenhagen is number five on the list of travel destinations to visit according to New York Times’ trendsetting travel section. The newspaper describes the city as one of the world’s greenest and coolest cities.
The reason behind is that Copenhageners don’t simply preach the “progressive city” philosophy but in fact live it. Among others with the unique bicycle tradition and the two public baths in Copenhagen’s inner harbor, a formerly polluted waterway recently transformed into a city summertime hub. Hosting the COP15 conference, the IOC congress and having Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey visiting the city – all in 2009 - has put Copenhagen and Denmark on the map in the American media and with the Americans in general.
But it is not only the Americans who have discovered Copenhagen. The European Consumers Choice has just voted Copenhagen as the European destination of the year and the place to see in 2011. The European Consumers Choice elects 10 European cities which are progressing the most. This year Copenhagen won as one of the most interesting European cities in front of Barcelona, Berlin, Rome and Madrid. The reason for the decision is that Copenhagen has gone through a pronounced development within the recent years which will attract a large number of tourists. Copenhagen received 25% of the overall number of votes.
The New York Times travel section has a circulation of 1.4 million and the website more than 15 million monthly visitors whereas the European Consumers Choice is a non-profit making organization which each year rewards 25 product ranges selected by a jury and European consumers.
