CPH growth rate among the highest in Europe

January through August 2010 CPH has experienced higher traffic growth than the other Nordic air traffic hubs and additionally CPH is among the European hub airports with the highest growth year to date.

The Dual Airport strategy which CPH follows is now beginning to show its strength.  The impressive traffic growth at CPH is driven by prosperity within both the low cost and full service segments. The range of low cost routes from CPH has been strengthened further and at the same time CPH has seen great progress on the intercontinental routes.

The immense growth has resulted in a record high number of new route inaugurations. In 2007, 2008 and 2009 respectively 20 new routes were inaugurated on average each year but this year no less than 30 new routes have been inaugurated so far. Among those are four intercontinental routes; Cairo with Egyptair, Doha with Qatar Airways, New York JFK with Delta Air Lines and Toronto with Air Canada.

The traffic hub of Northern Europe

The position of CPH as a central European air traffic hub is not only established by the immense growth alone but especially by the growth of CPH compared to the general development in the region. Each of the year’s first eight months, CPH has experienced a larger traffic growth than the three other Nordic hub airports. The high growth and continuous ranking above the other airports clearly shows that CPH has gotten through the Sterling bankruptcy and the general economic downturn reinforced.

Even compared to other European ACI airports the growth of CPH has been significantly higher. CPH has seen a total growth of the first nine months of the year of 8.2% while the average of the European airports were 1.6% and just 3.1% on average for Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki.

A high level of investments to future-proof CPH

There is continued room for growth within the low cost and full service segments respectively.  CPH maintains a high level of investments which our new low cost pier CPH Go is a clear example of. The CPH Go pier has just been opened on October 31st with easyJet as launch customer. Even before the opening, CPH Go has attracted additional low cost traffic to Copenhagen and it is expected to strengthen this area further. Within the last 12 months alone the market share of LCCs at CPH has increased by four percentage points to 18.2 % for September.

World class transfer

The strategic partnership between CPH and SAS is a promising initiative which will contribute in making CPH a world class airport – including making CPH one of the world’s best transfer airports. By reducing the transfer time at CPH on travels within the Schengen countries to only 30 minutes, the cooperation has already generated 70 extra daily flight connections via Copenhagen within the first six months. So while other European hub airports have had to increase the transfer time, CPH has been able to reduce it and thus opened up for a host of new and improved travel options for the passengers.
